There are several big vintage motorcycle meets around the country where one
can enjoy a 3 day immersion into motorcycling as it was years ago. The AMA
Vintage Days Meet at MidOhio in July is probably the largest one. But in the
last couple of years a new star has been rising with the Barber Vintage
Festival held in Oct near Birmingham AL on the grounds of the Barber Motosport
Park. The grounds are off to themselves and large enough to accomodate very
large events without seeming to be crowded. The race track is very nice with
many good view points. Then there is the wonderful Barber Motorcycle Museum
which is likely the best motorcycle museum in the country. During the festival
they had it open until 9pm each evening to allow visitors to see it without
missing the day activities.
This year the festival ran from Friday-Sunday Oct 20-22. One could get in
as early as Thursday afternoon.
Attending the event was very easy on the pocketbook with a $25 entrance fee
and a $25 camping fee for the 3 days. Considering the non stop list of events
going no matter what your motorcycle interest happens to be this was a good
deal. The American Historic Racing Association (AHRMA) was busy all weekend
with practise and racing of antique and vintage bikes. The swap meet was
pretty large but not quite up to MidOhio standards yet but the potential is
there. This is a different area of the country so this is a totally
different group of bikes than seen in the Ohio area. I saw plenty of good
deals. There had been recent rains which muddied up the swap meet area a
little bit but the weather was clear and nice during the meet. There
were many other things going on such as the Trials and Motocross events
and the VJMC events and a nice Bridgestone exhibit and a bike judging.
I arrived at 2pm on Friday after a 1200 mile drive (Toyota pickup) and set
up camp and began photographing. I was up early Saturday and was busy all
day and began the journey back to NH at 10pm Saturday night. I took over 4000
photographs and did not come close to photographing all I wanted to but plan
to do a better job in 2007.
