Laconia NH has long been associated with motorcycle racing from the original
nearby Belknap track to the nearby New Hampshire International Speedway in
Loudon NH. Up until 2003 there were vintage races around the time of the
Laconia Bike Week at the Gunstock Ski Area in Gilford NH (See our CD 03_09).
But starting in 2004 the USCRA started doing an exhibition race right in
downtown Laconia. So on Sunday June 12th 2005 the USCRA held the 2nd annual
downtown Laconia vintage races. The race teams set up around the railroad
station and in addition to race bikes there were lots of vintage street bikes
to see also.
We got there early enough Sunday morning to see the track being laid out. When
each race started many streets were closed down until they ended. Spectators
could get thrilling views of the cycles weaving through city streets. And all
this was free and there was even ample free parking. This is a great event for
anyone who likes to be around vintage bikes.
