The Motogiro d'Italia is a road run for small motor cycles in Italy started in 1914 and continued until 1957. It was restarted in Italy in 2001. In 2004 the USCRA started Motogiro USA loosely based on the Italian one and restricted to 1967 and earlier and 250cc and smaller motorcycles with a few exceptions. See the USCRA website for more details. The first year it was held in upstate NY and since then somewhere in Vermont during September. In addtion to the fall Motogiro a spring one was added that has been held in Roxbury NY at the Plattekill Ski Area. Interestingly in 2008 the Italian Motogiro organization held a Motogiro road run in California. So this style event with small vintage motorcycles seems to be a growing trend. For the USCRA Motogiro USA events a course of 100 miles or so is laid out for each of the two days. A low average speed is set between check points so it is not a speed race. At the start and midpoint and end of each days run a short course of traffic cones is set up and each rider tries to trasverse the course in set number of seconds.

In both the spring and fall the USCRA Motogiro has been attracting over 70 entries. For those who like small vintage motorcycles it is a real treat to see so many small vintage motorcycles on the road. There is no cost to show up at these events and watch. Early May is usually cool at the Plattekill Ski Area. There is a small fee for camping and about the only other people you will see are bicycle riders getting a lift to the top of the mountain for a ride down. I arrived Friday afternoon from Cornish NH (180 miles) on my BMW K75 and left on Saturday afternoon. I ended up with about 1300 photographs. For most of the motorcycles present I was able to get a full 16 view set of photos showing lots of detail. A CD of all photos in 1280x960 jpg format is available for $10 including shipping anywhere in the world (CD 08_03).
