The Motogiro d'Italia started in 1914 and continued until 1957. It was Italy's premier long distance road race. It was restarted in 2001 and in 2004 had 350 riders from around the world. The USCRA began sponsoring the Motogiro USA in 2004.

The second annual Motogiro USA was held September 16-18 2005. The event director was Bob Bove. You can find more information at www.motogiro-usa.com. The event was held again at the Plattekill Ski Area in Roxbury NY on the northern edge of the Catskills. You could camp there for $5 a night with no facilities but the ski resort was open during the day. It is a very picturesque place that only has to be shared with mountain bikers who use the lift to get to the top of the mountain to ride down.

Friday Sep 16th Registration from 5-9:30pm

Saturday Sep 17th
First section 86miles. Ride starts at 9am with bikes starting every 30 seconds and ending in Cooperstown for lunch at the OMMEGANG Brewry.
Second section 65 miles. Starts from Brewery back to Plattekill for dinner at the Ski Area.

Sunday Sep 18th
Third section 84 miles. Ride starts at 9am with bikes starting every 30 seconds and the ride ends back at the starting point.

Each section start has an ability trial which had a short course laid out that needed to be traversed as close as possible to 10 seconds. This was an important part of the scoring.

The motorcycles need to be street legal and of pre-1968 manufacture although later years were allowed if similar to the pre-1968 model. The maximum displacement was 250cc. There were 4 classes
0 to 65cc
66 to 125cc
126 to 200cc
201 to 250cc

Vintage Focus only attended the event on Sunday morning from 8:30am to 1:30pm. I tried to get a profile of every bike and also photos of the riders as they started and returned from their ride. There were more than 40 riders on Saturday and more than 30 riders on Sunday. Everybody appeared to have a great time riding the very scenic roads. Let us hope that this event continues to grow each year. It provides a unique opportunity for vintage bike riders to share experiences in a beautiful country setting.
