The Motogiro d'Italia started in 1914 and continued until 1957. It was Italy's premier long distance road race. It was restarted in 2001. The United States Classic Racing Association began sponsoring a race loosely patterned after it in 2004 called the Motogiro USA. It is a two day road endurance race with a carefully laid out course along scenic public roads. In addition there is a 20 meter course with cones that each rider has to traverse at different points during the day. There is a set time to complete the cone course and penalties are given for hitting the cones or touching the ground. The race is restricted to bikes made prior to 1967 and 250cc or smaller. Special exceptions can be granted by the organizers for bikes not quite meeting these specification.

The third annual Motogiro USA was held September 15-17 2006 at the Grey Bonnet Inn in Killington VT. This is a great area for motorcycle riding along the famous VT Rt 100. Participants could stay at the Grey Bonnet Inn or camp at the Gifford Woods State Park right next door. Organizers and riders began arriving Friday afternoon but the first leg of the race started at 9am Saturday morning. It was a 78 mile run to the green at Bristol VT where a cone test was given and after a rest everyone rode back along a different course to the Grey Bonnet and another cone test. Saturday evening had a group dinner at the Grey Bonnet Inn. On Sunday there was another run to Tunbridge VT fair and back. Awards were presented after that and everyone headed for home Sunday afternoon.

I headed over to Killington Friday Afternoon on my 1978 Morini 3 1/2 Strada. I photographed many of the bikes that afternoon and then on Saturday tried to photograph all the rest of the race bikes. I waited at several places along the course on Saturday and photographed the riders going past and as they finished up back at the Grey Bonnet. I had to head home Saturday at dusk so did not photograph any of the Sunday events.
